HMS Gloucester (1939) CC  (9th)

    
This the ninth ship to carry the name HMS Gloucester was a Cruiser.

Built at Devonport Dockyard, laid down 22-Sep-1936, launched 19-Oct-1937 and commissioned 31-Jan-1939.

On completion went to the East Indies as Flagship of the 4th Cruiser Squadron.

At the outbreak of WW2 carried out patrols in the Indian Ocean until Dc-1939 when she joined Force I at Simonstown.

Remaining there until May 1940 when she joined the 7th Cruiser Squadron in the Mediterranean Fleet based at Alexandria.

Took part in Malta Convoy operations and the Battle of Calabria operating in the Eastern Mediterranean for the rest of 1940.

On 11-Jan-1941 during Operation Excess was hit by a bomb which did not explode.

Was at the Battle of Matapan Mar-1941 and during Apr-1941 bombarded the North African coast several times.

On 22-May-1941 took part in operations at Crete, and while in company with HMS Fiji was dive bombed and sunk with the loss of 736.

Won the Battle Honours: Calabria 1940, Matapan 1941, Crete 1941, Malta Convoys 1941 and Mediterranean 1941.
