HMS Valiant (1966) SSN  (5th)

    
This the fifth ship to carry the name HMS Valiant was a Nuclear Powered Fleet submarine.

She was laid down in 22-Jan-1962, launched 03-Dec-1963 and commissioned 18-July-1966.

Details of her service need more research.

She was initially fitted to fire Mk8 or Mk20 torpedoes, and also lay mines.

Refit about 1970 to fire Mk23 torpedoes.

Refit in the late 1970's replaced the type 2001 sonar array with type 2020. A type 2026 towed array was added.

Appeared at the Silver Jubilee Review 1977.

In the early 1980's was fitted to fire Sub-Harpoon missiles.

Paid off in 1997 and is awaiting final disposal.

Won the Battle Honour: Falkland Islands 1982.
