This HMS Swiftsure the seventh to carry the name, was an Iron
Armoured ship.
Built by Palmer of Jarrow, laid down in Aug-1868, launched 15-Jun-1870 and completed Jun-1872. She saw initial service in the Channel, then out to the Mediterranean 1872-78. After a refit at home, she was Flagship in the Pacific 1882-85, then another refit, and a period in Reserve, followed by a return to Flagship in the Pacific until1890. On her return from the Pacific, she was in Reserve for most of the time until 1901 when she was reduced to a stores hulk. Renamed Orontes Mar-1904. Sold 04-Jul-1908.
