HMS Barfleur (1944) DD  (5th)

This the fifth ship to carry the name HMS Barfleur was a Battle Class (1944), destroyer leader. As destroyer leader she had slightly reduced armament to allow the increased complement and working space needed to control a flotilla.

Built by Swan Hunter, laid down 28-Oct-1942, launched 01-Nov-1943, and commissioned 14-Sep-1944.

Was the only ship in her class to see active service during WW2, when she joined the British Pacific Fleet Mid-1945.

Took part in the last carrier operations against the Japanese mainland and was present in Toyo Bay at the Japanese surrender.

Returned to the UK 1947 and put into reserve.

Appeared at the Coronation Review 1953.

Served in the Mediterranean until late 1956 and was present at the Suez action in 1956. Returned to the UK Nov-1956 and joined the Home Fleet.

Paid off 1958 into reserve.

Arrived at Dalmuir for breaking up 29-Sep-1966.
