This the first ship to carry the name HMS Janus was a fifth rate, 44-gun, ship.

Built by Batson of Limehouse, launched 14-May-1778, 140ft long, 38ft wide and of 884 tons builders measurement.

Used as a storeship from Jan-1788.

Renamed HMS Dromedary 03-Mar-1788.

Wrecked 10-Aug-1800 off Trinidad.
