HMS Duchess (1952) DD  (4th)

    
This the fourth ship to carry the name HMS Duchess was a Daring Class (1952) destroyer.

Built by Thornycroft, laid down 02-Jul-1948, launched 09-Apr-1951 and completed 23-Oct-1852.

Appeared at the Coronation Review 1953.

After work-up went to the Mediterranean Feb-1953 and remained there on the Home/Mediterranean cycle until Jan-1959.

Refitted at Portsmouth 21-Jan-1959 to 30-Dec-1960, which included removal of all torpedo tubes and construction of deckhouses for additional accommodation.

Went to the Far East Jan-1963.

Loaned to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) 05-Mar-1964 for an initial term of five years and renamed HMAS Duchess. The loan was extended and bought by the RAN for scrap value Jul-1972.

Refitted and used as a training ship until paid off 24-Oct-1977. 

Sold for scrapping 21-Dec-1979 and broken up in Japan Jun-1980.
