Daring Class (1952) DD

Part of the 1944 construction programme, they were a class of 16 (later reduced to 8) fleet destroyers.

Initially it was decided that two of the previous Battle Class were to be completed to this design making two flotillas, each of eight ships. However as delays were being experienced in the supply of gun directors and priority being given to the construction of landing craft construction of eight were deferred for one year and later the other eight cancelled.

The machinery was built as two units, each having a boiler and turbine, this gave greater survivability as the ship would not be completely disabled by damage to one unit.

Four were completed with AC electricity and four with DC and the AC ships had a longer service life than the DC ships.
