Comus Class (1879)

The nine ships of the Comus Class were steel screw corvettes and later re-rated as third class cruisers.

They were intended as fleet scouts but their low speed meant they were not used as such. Their primary use was as trade protection vessels.

With their limited bunkerage, their full rig was essential.
