HMS Shark (1934) SS  (9th)

    
This the ninth ship to carry the name HMS Shark was an S Class submarine. The lead ship of the second group to be ordered, and sometimes called Shark Class.

Built at Chatham Dockyard, laid down 12-Jun-1933 launched 31-May-1934, and commissioned 05-Oct-1934.

Took part in the King George V Silver Jubilee Fleet Review 16-Jul-1935.

On 05-Jul-1940 while on the surface off Stavanger was sighted by a seaplane. On submerging two or three bombs exploded close to the stern causing considerable damage. After using all high pressure air to return to the surface, without steering gear and with hydroplanes jammed hard up she got under way steering on main engines.

More aircraft arrived and after sustaining more damage she surrendered to avoid needless loss of life. Two of her company were killed and 19 wounded.

About 0400 four trawlers arrived to take her under tow but she was scuttled.

Won the Battle Honour: North Sea 1940.
