HMS Opportune (1942) DD  (2nd)

    
This the second ship to carry the name HMS Opportune was an O Class, destroyer.

Built by Thornycroft, laid down 28-Mar-1940, launched 21-Jan-1942, and commissioned 14-Aug-1942.

Spent all her war service in Northern waters. !942 in Russian convoy escort work. Then 1943 in the Atlantic with 3rd and 5th Support Groups.

At the end of 1943 took part in operations which sank the German ship Scharnhorst.

Then back to the Arctic until the end of the war.

Used as a submarine target ship from Jan-1946, then an air target ship from Feb-1950.

Paid off Sep-1953 and broken up 25-Nov-1955.

Won the Battle Honours: Arctic 1942-45, North Africa 1942, Atlantic 1943, North Cape 1943 and Normandy 1944.
