This the first ship to carry the name HMS Birkenhead was an Iron Paddle frigate.

Built by Laird, launched 30-Dec-1845, 210ft long, 37ft 6in wide and of 1,400 tons builders measurement.

Used as a troopship from 1848.

Wrecked 26-Feb-1852 at Algoa bay, South Africa.
