Leander Class (1885) CC

This class of four were originally designed as Despatch Vessels but re-rated as 2nd Class Cruisers before completion.

They were part of the 1880 construction programme and similar to the Iris Class (1879) but had an armoured deck over the machinery space.

They had a sailing rig when completed which was reduced from time to time and finally removed shortly before they were disposed of.

They were considered good stem ships, but less good seaboats, being  wet amidships and rolling heavily in some weather conditions.
