Monarch Class (1869) BB

HMS Monarch was a single ship class of battleships and was the first ironclad to have gun turrets fitted. However the design was not satisfactory while she carried a conventional full ship rig on three masts.

This meant the turrets were effectively a central battery only able to fire on the beam.

She was also the first ship to mount 12in guns, and carried the most powerful engines then afloat, which made her the fastest ironclad of her day.

An extensive modernisation was carried out starting in 1890 when her sails were removed, rig reduced, power plant replaced, and a bridge fitted in front of an enlarged funnel.
