HMS Sherwood (1940) DD  (1st)

    
This the only ship to carry the name HMS Sherwood was a Town Class, destroyer. One of 50 sold to the Royal Navy under the destroyers for bases agreement.

Originally the USS Rodgers DD254, built by Bethlehem Steel of Quincy, laid down 25-Mar-1918, launched 04-Jul-1918, commissioned in the US Navy 01-Mar-1919, commissioned in the Royal Navy 23-Oct-1940 and renamed.

Arrived at Portsmouth for refit 26-Nov-1940 but was damaged by a near miss during an air raid. So completed the refit at Devonport on 08-Apr-1941. Joined the 12th Escort group at Iceland for convoy escort work.

Refitted on the Clyde Jul-1941 and on completion in Sep-1941 joined the 2nd Escort Group at Londonderry. Moved on to the 22nd Escort Group Nov-1941. Another refit was completed at Liverpool from Apr-1942 to 25-Aug-1942.

Used as an air target Aug-1942 until Oct-1942, then joined the Newfoundland Escort Force at St. Johns. Transferred to the C2 Group Mar-1943 and after escorting one return convoy from the UK to North Africa was laid up at Londonderry with defects.

After survey it was decided she was beyond economic repair and was stripped of useful parts at Chatham and towed to the Humber.

Removed from the effective list 30-Sep-1943 and beached 03-Oct-1943 in the Humber Estuary and used as a target for rocket armed Beaufighters.

Listed "destroyed" 1946.

Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1941-43 and North Sea 1943.
