HMS Orion (1879) (3rd)

This the third ship to carry the name HMS Orion was an armoured
corvette. Ordered by the Turkish Navy, as Boordji Zaffer, bought by the Admiralty while under construction. Built by Samuda, of Poplar, launched 23-Jan-1879, 245ft long, 52ft wide, and displacing 4,870 tons. Armed with 4 x 12in Muzzle Loading Rifled, and 6 x 6pdr guns. Renamed HMS Orontes Dec-1909 when use changed to a depot ship. Sold 19-Jun-1913 at Malta.
