HMS Ithuriel (1942) DD  (2nd)

    
This the second ship to carry the name HMS Ithuriel was an I Class (1942) destroyer.

Originally under construction for the Turkish Navy, laid down 24-May-1939,bought Sep-1939, launched 24-Feb-1941 and commissioned 03-Mar-1942.

On commissioning HMS Ithuriel went to the Mediterranean and continued there throughout WW2.

Took part in several Malta convoys, including 'Harpoon' and 'Pedestal'.

During 'Pedestal' she rammed and sank the Italian submarine Cobalto while receiving moderate damage to herself.

On the night of 27/28-Nov-1942 at Bone Harbour was badly damaged during an air raid. She was declared a Constructive Total Loss and the next month her guns were landed to form a shore battery.

In 1944 was towed to Malta, then Gibraltar and finally in 1945 back to the UK.

Sold 25-Aug-1945. Broken up Aug-1946 at Bo'ness.

Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1942, Malta Convoys 1942 and North Africa 1942.
