HMS Formidable (1901) BB  (4th)

This HMS Formidable the fourth to carry the name was the name ship of a class of three battleships.

She was built at Portsmouth Dockyard, launched 17-Nov-1898, and completed Sep-1901.

She served with the Mediterranean Fleet from 1901-1908. Then following a refit in 1909, served mainly with the Home Fleet until 1912 when she joined the 5th Battle Squadron.

On 01-Jan-1915 she was steaming off Start Point when she was hit by a torpedo from a submarine. A second one hit about 45 minutes later, after which she slowly sank.

Her 12in guns were salvaged and used to arm the M Class (1918) submarine monitors.
