HMS Canopus (1798)  (1st)

This the first ship to car the name HMS Canopus was a third rate, 80-gun, ship-of-the-line.

Originally French, the Franklin, captured 01-Aug-1798, at the Battle of the Nile. 194ft long, 52ft 6in wide and of 2,257 tons builders measurement.

Armed with 32 x 32pdr, 6 x 32pdr carronades, 36 x 18pdr, and 6 x 9pdr guns.

Took part in the Royal Fleet Review 1845.

Used for harbour service from 1863.

Sold Oct-1887 and broken up.

Won the Battle Honour: San Domingo 1806.
