HMS Atheling (1943) CVE  (1st)

    
This the only ship to carry the name HMS Atheling was a Ruler Class (1942) escort aircraft carrier. Built for the US Navy as USS Glacier, CVE 33, and transferred to the Royal Navy under lease-lend terms.

Built by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp of Seattle, laid down 09-Jun-1942, launched 07-Sep-1942.

Transferred to the Royal Navy and and after being modified at Vancouver to meet Royal Navy Requirements was commissioned 28-Oct-1943.

After modifications at the Clyde for use as a fighter carrier, joined the Eastern Fleet.

Operations in the Indian Ocean continued from Jun-1944 to Oct-1944. Served as a ferry carrier with the Eastern Fleet Oct to Dec-1944.

Loaned to the US Navy Dec-1944 to Sep-1945.

 Returned to the UK Sep-1945 for conversion for trooping duties which took until Nov-1945.

Used as a troop transport until Nov-1946 when she was de-stored.

Returned to the USN at Norfolk, Virginia 13-Dec-1946.

Sold 1950 as merchant ship Roma.

Broken up for scrap in Italy 02-Nov-1967.
