Description The campaign took place in present day Iraq and was fought against the Turks.

On 23-Oct-1914 Indian troops were landed and within a month had captured Basra. Reinforcements arrived in early 1915 and an advance was made towards Bagdad. Supported by river gunboats and transports. Naval brigades provided artillery support.

By early 1917 Bagdad had been captured with naval brigades providing river gunboat support.

The campaign ended in mid-1917. It was characterised by "indecision and fool hardy orders".

There were over 80,000 British and Indian casualties and this included nearly 13,000 who died of disease.
