Description The action took place about 14 miles north-west-by-west (292º) from Cape Salvore in the Gulf of Trieste.

At 1500 hrs the previous day HMS Victorious accompanied by HMS Weazle sighted the French third rate ship Rivoli accompanied by 2 brigs and 2 gunboats and gave chase.

At 0430hrs Victorious engaged Rivoli, after three hours both ships had become disabled and grounded in the shallow waters, but continued firing. Weazel then came up also engaged Rivoli at 0800hrs which struck her colours at 0830hrs.

Victorious lost 27 killed and 99 wounded out of 506 aboard.  Rivoli suffered 400 killed and wounded out of 810 aboard.
