Description The action began about 640 miles west by south of the Canary Islands at 26º 16'N, 29º 25'W.

HMS London in company with Foudroyant and Amazon sighted two sails to the north east which turned out to be the French ships Marengo and Belle Poule and the British squadron gave chase.

While London was engaging the Marengo, HMS Amazon overtook and at 0830hrs opened fire on the Belle Poule. The action continued until 1025hrs when, with HMS Foudroyant closing fast, the Belle Poule struck her colours.
