Devastation Class (1873) BB

The two ships of the Devastation Class were a major advance i battleship design, which derived from lessons with early monitors.

They were the first large fighting ships which did not carry a full rig of masts and sails, and depended entirely on steam for their propulsion.

Considering they were laid down only eight years after HMS Warrior had gone to sea and that that broadside armed ships were to be built for another five years, their design was even more revolutionary.

They were regarded with a great deal of suspicion before they entered service but proved themselves very capable ships.

Their armour broke away from the concept of a central armoured battery and returned to the fully armoured ship, with side armour provided for the entire length of the hull.

Thunderer was the first ship to use a hydraulic rammer for loading her guns.
