Achilles Class (1864) BB

HMS Achilles was a class of one and a follow on to the Warrior design. She was the first all-iron ship to be built in a royal dockyard.

She differed from Warrior in having a straight stem and a stern designed to give increased protection to the rudder and crew,

When built she was rigged with four masts, a unique arrangement, but one mast was removed early in her life.

She  was exceptionally stable and made an excellent gun platform.

Overall Achilles was a very successful ship and enjoyed a fine reputation.
