HMS Whelp (1944) DD  (1st)

    
This the only ship to carry the name HMS Whelp was a W Class (1943), destroyer.

Built by Hawthorn Leslie, laid down 01-May-1942, launched 03-Jun-1943, and commissioned 26-Apr-1944.

On commissioning formed part of the 27th Destroyer Flotilla.

To the Channel Jun-1944 for the Normandy landings. Followed Aug-1944 with Arctic convoy duty. Then Nov-1944 to the Indian Ocean as part of the 27th Destroyer Flotilla. Moving to the British Pacific Fleet, Jan-1945 for the remainder of the war.

Sold to South African Navy 1952 and renamed Simon Van der Stel.

Broken up 1976 at Durban.

Won the Battle Honours: East Indies 1944 and Okinawa 1945.
