This the first ship to carry the name HMS Thorn  was a 16-gun, sloop.

Built by Betts of Mistleythorn, launched 17-Feb-1779, 96ft 6in long, 27ft wide and of 306 tons builders measurement. Armed with 14 x 32pdr carronades, and 2 x 6pdr guns.

 In French hands 25-Aug-1779 to 20-Aug-1782.

Loaned as a training ship 1799.
