This the second ship to carry the name HMS Chesterfield was a
Town Class, destroyer. One of 50 sold to the Royal Navy under the
destroyers for bases agreement. Originally the USS Welborn C Wood DD195, built by Newport News Shipbuilding Co, laid down 24-Sep-1918, launched 06-Mar-1920, commissioned in the US Navy 25-Jun-1920, commissioned in the Royal Navy 09-Sep-1940 and renamed. Refitted at Chatham 26-Nov-1940 to 25-Jan-1941, and started operational duties with the 11th Escort Group 27-Feb-1941 at Liverpool. Moved to Iceland to join the 3rd Escort Group for escort duty in the mid-Atlantic and remained with this until defects were repaired on the Clyde from May to June-1941. When they were completed joined the Newfoundland Escort Force with the 18th Escort Group. Moving on to the 23rd Escort Group July-1941. Both Groups working as convoy escorts. This continued until refitted at Portsmouth 06-Oct-1941 to 17-Jan-1942 when she escorted two Atlantic convoys. After this repairs on the Clyde took from Mar to Jun-1942. Another two Atlantic convoys followed but then more repairs were needed at Hull which began Oct-1942 for two months. Unfortunately during her first convoy she was damaged by depth charges set for too shallow a depth. Repairs took from Feb-1943 to Nov-1943, after which she was allocated to Rosyth Command for target duty. More repairs were needed from Mar-1944 until Nov-1944, this time at Dundee. By then it was decided that no more resources were to be spent on her and she was paid off at Rosyth 15-Jan-1945. Sold 04-Mar-1947 and broken up at Dunstan on the Tyne . Won the Battle Honour: Atlantic 1941-43.
