HMS Chanticleer (1943) SL  (3rd)

    
This the third ship to carry the name HMS Chanticleer was a Modified Black Swan Class (1942) escort vessel (sloop).

Built by Denny, laid down 13-Jun-1941, launched 24-Sep-1942 and completed 29-Mar-1943.

On commissioning was one of several escorts for a floating dock which was towed south of Britain to the Mediterranean. Then escorted convoys on the Gibraltar route from Jun to Sep-1943. Moved to the Clyde for escort duty in the North Atlantic.

Hit by an acoustic torpedo 18-Nov-1943 which blew her stern off. Towed to Ponta Delgada in Portugal and paid off on 22-Nov-1943.

However was towed to Horta and was used as headquarters for the base unit at that port.

Renamed HMS Hesperides 01-Jan-1944 and commissioned as the base ship at Horta where she remained for the rest of WW2.

Renamed HMS Lusitania 08-Oct-1944, and paid off again at the end of the war in Europe.

Sold and broken up locally at Lisbon 1946.

Won the Battle Honours: Sicily 1943 and Atlantic 1943.
