Honour - 'Curieux' 1804

Date - 04-February
Type - Single Ship or Boat Service Actions
Conflict - Napoleonic War; 1803-15

Description This boat service action took place at Fort-Royal harbour, Martinique.

After rowing about 20 miles a boarding party from HMS Centaur boarded and took  the French brig-corvette Curieux.

At 0045hrs the approaching boats were hailed by sentries who were especially alerted to watch for a suspected boarding attempt. The sentries opened fire which was returned while the boats closed the ship and began boarding. During the fight on the deck most of the ships officers were killed or wounded and the crew driven below decks.

The cables were soon cut, sails unfurled and the prize sailed to sea past the successive fire from French batteries at Pointe Negro and Pointe Soloman.

Before daybreak the Curieux was anchored next to Centaur.

Curieux was commissioned into the Royal Navy.

Centaur lost 2 killed and 7 wounded. Curieux lost 10 killed and 30 wounded out of 70 on board.
